Born John Eley in 1949, he is an English Anglican priest 〔Crockford's Clerical Directory 2008/2009 (100th edition), Church House Publishing (ISBN 978-0-7151-1030-0)〕 who was a lighting engineer before studying for the priesthood at Salisbury & Wells Theological College. His first post was as a Curate at Sherborne Abbey, after which he became a Minor Canon at Carlisle Cathedral.
